Once, Bhagat Namdev Ji was lovingly immersed in singing the praises of the Lord. The All-Knowing Lord observed that Namdev Ji’s hut (chapri) had grown old and worn. Knowing that Namdev Ji would not build a new one on his own, the Lord, in His divine play, took the form of a saint and burned the hut to inspire action.

Seeing the hut burnt, Namdev Ji’s grandparents gave him 20 rupees to hire a carpenter. On his way to find one, Namdev Ji encountered a group of saints who had not eaten in seven days. Moved by compassion, he spent the entire amount to cook and serve them food.

He then decided to rebuild the hut himself. While cutting slippery tree branches early in the morning, he noticed the dew-soaked bark and felt that the plant was in pain. Sensitive to even the suffering of plants, Namdev Ji struck his own leg with the axe to understand its pain, and chose not to harm the tree.

He thought, “If it is the Lord’s will, I will live without a hut.”

Touched by this deep devotion, the Lord Himself took a physical form as a divine carpenter, came to Namdev Ji, and began building the hut. Wherever the Lord placed bamboo poles, a divine glow radiated like lotus blossoms — as if the Lord’s feet were blessing the very structure.

After completing the hut, the Lord also appeared in the form of a healer to treat Namdev Ji’s wound. Recognizing His Lord, Namdev Ji was overwhelmed with love and requested to see His true form. The Lord granted divine darshan and instructed Namdev Ji to go and see the newly built hut.

Overjoyed, Namdev Ji returned home, sat in the new hut, and resumed singing the glories of the Lord. Seeing the beautiful divine structure, his neighbor also wished for such a hut and asked him to bring the same carpenter.

The Shabad featured in this video captures this sacred dialogue between Bhagat Namdev Ji and his neighbor, as revealed in Raag Sorath, Ghar 4, on Ang 657 of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

In this divine story, the Lord who tested, guided, healed, and built — was none other than Lord Ram, the eternal Master of Bhagat Namdev Ji.

ਇਕ ਵਾਰੀ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਬੈਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ
ਰਹੇ ਸਨ, ਤਾਂ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਭਗਤ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਛਪਰੀ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਭਗਤ ਜੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਤੋੜ ਦੇਈਏ, ਫੇਰ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਏਗਾ। ਸਾਧ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਛਪਰੀ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਭਗਤ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ (ਨਾਨਾ ਨਾਨੀ) ਨੇ ਵੀਹ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਕਿ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਕੋਈ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਾਰੀਗਰ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਨਵੀਂ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ। ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਵੀਹ ਰੁਪਏ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਾਰੀਗਰ ਨੂੰ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਪਏ। ਜਦੋਂ ਥੋੜਾ ਅੱਗੇ ਗਏ ਤਾਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਤ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖੀ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਮਾਤ ਮਿਲੀ ਤੇ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਛਕਣ ਦੀ ਜਾਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਵੀਹ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਾ ਸੀਧਾ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਛਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਤੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਲਵਾੜ ਵੱਢ ਕੇ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਲਵਾਂਗੇ। ਜਦੋਂ ਸਲਵਾੜ ਵੱਢਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਦਾਤਰੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਵੱਢਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਵੇਰ ਦਾ ਵਕਤ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੇਲ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਰਕੜੇ ਦੇ ਬੂਟੇ ਗਿੱਲੇ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਾਇਦ ਇਹ ਬੂਟੇ ਦਾਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਦੁਖ ਕਰਕੇ ਰੋਏ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਪੀੜ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ। ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਦੁਖ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਲੱਤ 'ਤੇ ਦਾਤਰੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਭਗਤ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਸਰਕੜੇ ਦੇ ਬੂਟੇ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਣ ਲਈ ਚਿਤ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਕੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਛਪਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਲਵਾਂਗੇ । ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਨੇ ਸਰਗੁਣ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਰੀਗਰ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਜਿਥੇ-ਜਿਥੇ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਦੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਪਾਏ, ਉਥੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਕਮਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਦਮ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਚਮਕਾਰੇ ਪੈਣ ਭਾਵ ਚਰਨ ਮੋਤੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਫਿਰ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਕੋਲ ਹਕੀਮ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਭਗਤ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਚਾਣ ਕੇ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ ਕਿ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਜੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅਸਲੀ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਵੀ ਦੇਣਾ ਕਰੋ। ਭਗਤ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਾਹ ਤੇਰੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬੱਝੀ ਪਈ ਹੈ, ਜਾਹ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਲੈ । ਤਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਆ ਕੇ ਨਵੀਂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਣ ਲੱਗੇ। ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਗਵਾਂਢਣ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਛਪਰੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਰੀਸ ਆਈ ਤੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੀ ਕਿ ਐਸੀ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਾਰੀਗਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਦੇਣਾ ਕਰੋ। ਇਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਆਂਢਣ ਦਾ ਸੰਵਾਦ ਹੋਇਆ।

ਉਸਨੂੰ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਸੋਰਠਿ ਰਾਗਣੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਘਰੁ ੪ = ਚੌਥੇ ਸੁਰਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥

ਇਸ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ, ਸਦੀਵੀ, ਰਾਖਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰੀਗਰ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਆਇਆ — ਉਹ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ, ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਪਰਮ ਸੇਵਣਯੋਗ – ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਜੀ ਹੀ ਸਨ।
