Описание: The Indian Ocean, which stretches from Africa to Australia, is home to a rich history, diverse marine life, and varieties of cultural practices. The monsoon is a seasonal wind system of the Indian Ocean that brings rain to India and Sri Lanka. For thousands of years, it has also made it easier for ships to travel between Asia and Africa on coastal as well as high seas. Since the time of the Egyptians, the Indian Ocean has been an important center of the cultures of nearby countries, like the Indus Valley Civilization, the Mauryan Empire, and the Swahili Culture. But most important, It has also been a busy and live trade route between the Mediterranean and the Far East transversing through the Indian subcontinent. The area's trade history was influenced by various cultures, religions, and groups of people.

Prior to the Portuguese coming, Arab merchants run and control the trade and commerce in the area through a hierarchical port system along the coastline which run in cohesion and connivance with the local king or chieftain. This gave Muslims a monopoly on trade and turned the area into the Islamic Sea. There was a virtual monopoly of arab merchants from Canton to Malacca to Calicut to Diu to Aden to Fustat and Alexandria in the Mediterranean.

Therefore, to understand the development in world history, you need to know how maritime trade and commerce developed in the Indian Ocean Region, which connects Europe to the East and Far East the busiest and most important long-distance trade routes.

Accordingly, to make it is easy, the history of the Indian Ocean is divided into four parts:
1. Transformation of the Indian Ocean into the Islamic Sea prior to Portuguese arrival
2. Portuguese Hegemony in the Indian Ocean in the sixteenth Century
3. VOC: Age of Dutch East India Company
4. British Imperialism in the Indian Ocean
