From the plane, I could see the Japanese wave breakers, the concrete they installed around the coast to prevent tsunamis. Apparently hotly debated since it makes the coast quite ugly.
It was really stressful through customs and security and then getting the SIM to work, buying and loading up the suica card and getting some cash. I was told this would be the hardest part of the trip, and I hope they're right 😄
I skipped the fancy tourist lines and took a commuter train from the airport to Tokyo. I'm already the only gaijin in the train and people are politely glancing at me. I didn't think that would happen on day I, but the tourism really mostly sticks to hot spots.
My hostel is a gorgeous traditional house in the quiet neighborhood of Asakusa. There's a nice communal kitchen where you can chat with others about your day.
