"Share the Land," written by Burton Cummings, was the Guess Who's 5th top 10 hit landing on the no. 10 position in 1970 (Whitburn, 2013). Cummings was interviewed by Howard Stern in 1994 and was asked what the song was about; although Burton didn't have a chance to actually answer the question, due to Stern's interruptions, he said that the song was banned in Texas and some other southern states because they thought it was supporting communism, which he brushed off (H. Stern/B. Cummings, youtube, Mar 7, 2020). The song was more of a communalist anthem (R. Polcaro, rockandrollgarage, Nov. 25, 2017). It was "a utopian fantasy, dreaming of a time and a world where all property is shared and people live together in harmony. (This sort of idealism was big in the late ’60s and early ’70s)" (M. Miller, classicsongoftheday, Jan. 26, 2025). During an interview with Dale Kawashima, Cummings provided a bit more context for the background of the song: "Well, it was the hippie days. I think the Youngbloods song “Get Together” had become an anthem at the big pop festivals. And I was trying to think along those lines…you know, all of us living together in peace. It’s one of those songs that I didn’t think about it too much when I wrote it. It sort of rolled out. I had that hook, (he sings) 'Maybe I’ll be there to shake your hand, maybe I’ll be there to share the land, let me give it away…' I had that in my head very early, and I built the rest of the song around that" (D.
