In the fall of 1972, twenty-eight-year-old Paul Einhorn buried his
father in Franklin County, Nebraska. A week later, he opened his
father's old toolbox for the first time. Inside, beneath rusted
wrenches and forgotten bolts, he found a yellowed piece of paper—a
hand-drawn map of the family farm, with an X marking a spot in the
north pasture. His father's handwriting read: "1943. Only when you
truly need it." Paul showed the map to the John Deere dealer in town,
hoping for advice. The dealer laughed so hard he had to sit down.
"You're digging for buried treasure? What are you, twelve years old?
Your father left you a farm, not a pirate map." Paul started digging
anyway. For three years, his neighbors called him "Treasure Hunter
Paul" and waited for him to give up. He never did. And on a spring
morning in 1975, six feet down in that north pasture, his shovel
hit metal.
This story draws from real agricultural history of the 1970s-80s.
