Synopsis :
One morning, Byomkesh notices an interesting report among several mundane news in the daily- the release of criminal Ramanath Neogi from Alipur Jail ten days ago. Ramanath, a dangerous jewel thief was arrested ten years ago for stealing the Red Amethyst (Raktomukhee Neela) from Maharaj Ramendra Singha, which he considered his lucky charm. Now, Maharaj comes to Bakshi requesting him to investigate the murder of one of his associate, Haripada Rakshit. Maharaj reveals that the Haripada has been a criminal years ago. He promises Maharaj that he would never again engage in any sort of criminal activities, and has been a perfect employee since then. Then, a few days ago, he is found dead in his home with his throat cut. We also come to know from Maharaj that even before his death, Haripada once asked his master if he gave the lost gem back to him now, whether he would give him the Rs.2000 as reward. Finally, in the afternoon Byomkesh decodes the mystery in the presence of everyone. Ramanath kept the gem with him when he was arrested. When police came to search him, Ramanath passed it to his fellow prisoner Haripada and the latter hid it in a hidden pocket in his throat. Unfortunately, Haripada was transferred to another jail the next day, along with the gem. So after he comes back from the jail and decides to return the gem to Maharaj, Ramanath takes his revenge by murdering him.
