Billie Jean King was still competing at a top level in this match at age 35. Her opponent is Kathy May, who reached three Grand Slam quarterfinals, once at the US Open in 1978 and twice at the French Open in 1977 and 1978. She won seven WTA singles titles during her career, and achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 10 in 1977. She competed here under the names Kathy May Teacher after her marriage earlier in the year, in 1979, to tennis player Brian Teacher, and later as Kathy May-Paben. Her son Taylor Fritz, from ger marriage to Guy Fritz, is also a professional tennis player who reached a world ranking of #4 in November 2024.
Billie Jean King is a American former world No. 1 tennis player who won 39 Grand Slam titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles, which included 6 Wimbledon singles titles amd 10 in doubles, as well as 4 US Open singles titles and 5 in doubles. She has won all the major singles titles. She was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups.
