JACOB BARRETT: Waitā

Описание: Jacob Barrett's 2024/25 SOUNZ Community Commission saw the composer working with Manawa Ora | Wellington Regional Hospital Orchestra and Choir to create a suite of Orchestral Lullabies for Matariki. Jacob worked with students from Newtown School to source texts for nine lullabies, each one representing a star from Matariki. For 'Waitā', student Davy provided the text.

Waitā is the sixth star of Matariki, and is associated with the ocean, tides, and food gathered from the sea. Looking to Waitā at Matariki helps us to care for our oceans and the animals living in them. This lullaby starts with very sparse textures of solo violin and percussion, builds to a majestic climax with the full orchestra and choir, and then seemingly disappears into the stars of the harp and tuned percussion.
