After Jethro (Yitro) advises Moses to share leadership through appointed judges, the people arrive at Mount Sinai, where God reveals His glory and declares His intention that Israel become a kingdom of priests and a holy, set-apart nation, representing Him to the world. This calling is sealed with the dramatic revelation at Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments, which define both devotion to God and ethical life with others. Yitro teaches that Israel’s freedom is not merely escape from slavery, but a calling shaped by holiness, obedience, and service in God’s presence.

Here is the Torah timeline: after leaving Egypt at Passover on the 15th of Nisan (Exod. 12–13), counting each day begins right after the first day of Passover (Lev. 23:15), which is seven full weeks (7 × 7 = 49 days), and then the next day — day 50 — is the giving of the Torah at Sinai.

This counting is known as the Counting of the Omer (Sefirat HaOmer).

Here’s how it lines up:
Day 1: The day after the first Passover day (start of the Omer count)
Days 1–49: Journey from Egypt to Sinai, counting each day
Day 50: Arrival at Sinai and the giving of the Ten Commandments

This day later becomes known as Shavuot (the Hebrew word for “Weeks”), or in Greek “Pentecost” (pentēkostē is the Greek word that means “fiftieth”).

When Jews in the Greek-speaking world refer to Shavuot, they call it Pentecost.
So Pentecost = Shavuot = the 50th day after Passover.

In short:
Passover = redemption from slavery

“Counting the Omer” is what Jews do immediately after Passover: that is, they count each day of the week for seven full weeks (7x7 equals 49 days)

“Counting the Omer”= preparation and transformation
Shavuot / Pentecost = revelation and covenant

Jewish and Christian theology alike see a deep pattern here: redemption leads to revelation, and freedom finds its purpose in becoming a people set apart — a kingdom of priests — at Sinai.
