This is an introductory video on the study of sin. You will learn about the origin, nature, and effect of our sin, according to the Bible.
Session 1: Introduction | This video series is part of a Bible reading plan at Anthem Church, which provides the key scriptures that form and support 10 foundational Christian beliefs.
Section 2: My Story | Pastor Phil explains why he personally experiences and hates sin from his lived experience.
Session 3: Our Response to Sin | Pastor Phil briefly explains how people have a difficult time talking about sin because of their experience.
Session 4: Outcome | You will be able to form a more coherent view of your sin, including the nature, effect, and origin of sin in your life.
Session 5: Nature of Sin | We look at the key Bible verses, which define sin as lawlessness, wrongdoing, morally bad, and the tension between it being passive and active.
Session 6: Corruption of Sin | We explore how sin is more than a behavior, but is an influence in our world. Sin is like a sickness that influences everything we do and say.
Session 7: Conflict of Sin | Even Christians will battle with and struggle against sin. Pastor Phil explains how sin wants to consume our lives, and lead us to death. You will also learn how sin helps us to look to Jesus, and what that means according to Romans 6:13-14.
Session 8: Origin of Sin | Pastor Phil explains the three views of sin's origin, which are monism, dualism and demonism.
Session 9: Beginning of Sin (1 of 2) | You will explore how Genesis 3 explains the source of our conflict with sin, including our struggles with temptation and Satan.
Session 10: Satan's Strategy | Pastor Phil steps out of Genesis 3 to explore parallel passages in the new testament, which help us understand Satan's direct and indirect ways to tempt us to sin.
Session 11: Beginning of Sin (2 of 2) | You will explore how Genesis 3 explains the significance of human disobedience, and how God responded to our sin in the garden.
Session 12: Our Response | You will learn about 2 important passages for a Christian to know about sin, which is 1 John 1:8-9 and James 5:16, which teach us the importance of confessing our sins.
Session 13: Why a Tree? | Pastor Phil explains the three views of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and what that means for us today.
Session 14: Two Biblical Questions | Pastor Phil answers two specific questions in regards to Genesis 3, which is, "In what way was their eyes opened in verse 3?" and then, "In what sense did they become like God in verse 22?"
Session 15: Conclusions on the Origin of Sin | Adam and Eve's disobedience produced death through their sin. Learn more about the significance of Romans 5, and how the New Testament explains more of the significance of Adam's Sin and Jesus' response.
Session 16: Guilty of Adam's Sin | What does it mean that we are accountable for Adam's sin? Pastor Phil explains two views of our being guilty and responsible for the sin problem.
Session 17: Effect of Sin | You will learn about the consequences of sin, which are physical, moral and legal effects on our life.
Session 18: Fall of Mankind | With all of this said, what do you think about the nature, effect and origin of sin? Pastor Phil explains the three traditional views on the fall of man.
Session 19: New Creation | In light of our sin, then what does it mean that we are changed? Pastor Phil explains this Biblically and then theologically.
Session 20: Sin in a Postmodern Age | Pastor Phil explains how sin is an act of idolatry, and how that helps people understand their brokenness in a time when 'laws' and 'rules' are resisted.
Session 21: Conclusion | Final comments on our belief about our sin in light of the scriptures.
