Spain’s King Felipe awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece to Queen Sofia and key figures of the country’s democratic transition, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of Franco’s dictatorship.
The ceremony at the Royal Palace in Madrid also honored former Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez and constitutional lawyers Miguel Herrero, Rodriguez de Miñon, and Miquel Roca, who played pivotal roles in establishing Spain’s democratic constitution in 1978.
King Felipe praised the efforts of the monarchy and Spain’s leaders in opening the path to democracy, while Gonzalez highlighted the importance of civil peace in the country’s successful transition.
The Golden Fleece, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious orders, has previously been awarded to figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
