If you’re visiting the United Kingdom for the first time, you could get lost. Not because it’s a huge country. It’s quite small, actually. But you may not be able to identify in your map the station that’s being announced on the train. Or, when you ask the natives for directions to a place, you might find them scratching their heads.

It’s not because British maps are haywire and the locals clueless—but because English place names tend to have bizarre pronunciations that are impossible to predict from the spellings. Nobody’s sure why this is the case, but there are a couple of theories. Find out what they are.

By the way, there’s a river that’s called Isis in one part of England, but it has a different name in London. Can you guess it? It’s a name which also has an unusual pronunciation and an interesting story.
