Dreammusic (1980) was commissioned and premièred by Phillip Thorne.
Thomas Wilson, who composed five solo works and a concerto for the instrument, felt the guitar uniquely represented emotional states and inner thoughts.
Phillip Thorne collaborated closely with the composer and shared these insights:
‘During the early stages of composition we talked a lot about dream imagery, but Tom never came away with the definite image. He realised that music created images but didn’t want to make these programmatic. He said that there were two phases in the dream world; the relaxed, lyrical time and the menacing moments. In composing Dreammusic, Tom brought these contrasts very close together to create a series of fleeting moments.’
