On the rugged north-Kent coast, this site begins with a Roman fort built around the second century AD to guard the Wantsum Channel and later evolved through an Anglo-Saxon monastery and a medieval church. You’ll walk among the skeletal twin towers that dominate the skyline, peer at the faint remains of the Roman earthworks, and reflect on coastal erosion that has claimed much of the original fort.
We’ll explore how this place served military, religious and navigation roles across centuries, acting both as a frontier defence and a spiritual centre. For visitors today the combination of marine views, ancient stones and layered history makes Reculver a rich and evocative stop.
