IS EMERGENCY COMING BACK TO INDIA? | Anjali joshi
Indira Gandhi vs Modi Government
In 1975, India entered one of the darkest chapters of its democratic history when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a National Emergency. Opposition leaders were arrested, press freedom was restricted, civil liberties were curtailed, and forced sterilization became a major controversy.
More than five decades later, the Emergency is once again at the centre of India's political debate.
In October 2026, protests in Delhi over voter-list revisions and demands for accountability from the Election Commission have triggered a major political confrontation. Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, have accused the Narendra Modi government of creating an “undeclared Emergency.” The protests have also raised questions about police action, press freedom, the right to peaceful protest, and electoral transparency.
The Modi government and BJP's position must also be considered while examining these allegations. The Election Commission has denied allegations of politically motivated voter-list manipulation, and the authorities have cited law-and-order concerns surrounding the protests.

Disclaimer: This video presents historical information and analysis of current political developments. The term “undeclared Emergency” is an allegation used by opposition leaders, not a formal declaration of a National Emergency. Allegations regarding voter lists and government actions are politically contested and should not be treated as proven facts without supporting evidence.
