Each HVDC unit weights 245 tons and requires a crew of at least 8 people to safely maneuver these units to Blackhillock Substation in northern Scotland. Starting at the manufacturing facility in Ludvika, Sweden, the units are sent via train to Port of Norrköping, Sweden, where they are carefully loaded with heavy lift shore-crane onboard a DTW 2650 Gearless Coaster (single decker). The vessel barely meets the maximum 87 meters in length in order to be able to berth at the small fishing port of Buckie. The vessel will normally lash starboard side, but due to the position of the cranes at the quay, and transformer being stowed very exact on the vessel for discharging to even be possible, the vessel had carefully pivot within extremely tight measurements.
The sailing takes roughly 5 days before it arrives in the Port of Buckie, Scotland, From there, the units are offloaded with extreme care and placed in a 24-axled Girder Frame trailer where they make the 16 mi / 25 km road trip through rolling hills of sheep, cozy Scottish villages, and iconic scenery.
The process is completed by utilizing a slide and jack technique to place the units on the the foundation. A total of 8 units were shipped and delivered safely to Blackhillock Substation and Spittal Substation during 2017.
