Stating results with so…………… that
‘Jane has been so busy’.
What’s missing in this sentence? In written English, you shouldn’t say someone is ‘so busy’ if you’re not going to explain ‘how busy’ she’s been. Use ‘that’ before you explain ‘how busy’ she has been.
The sentence should be:
‘Jane has been so busy that she hasn’t had much time to study.’
You shouldn’t say ‘Barbara was so happy’ if you’re not going to explain ‘how happy she was’. Use ‘that’ before you explain ‘how happy’ she was.
The sentence should be:
Barbara was so happy that she cried.
Tom has been working so hard that he falls asleep in class.
Nick has been having so much fun that he’s seldom homesick.
Sonia’s daughter was so sick that Sonia had to take her to hospital.
Remember, if you are not going to explain ‘how happy’ someone was, don’t use ‘so’. Use ‘very’.
‘She was very happy’.
If you are going to say ‘so happy’, you need to say how happy she was. ‘She was so happy that she could hardly contain herself’.
