In this video, I explore the Pre-Continuous Shooting (PCS) feature on Canon’s R5 Mark II and R1 cameras—an innovative tool designed to help you capture unpredictable moments in sports, wildlife, or action photography. PCS works by buffering up to 15 frames before you fully press the shutter, giving you the ability to “reach back in time” and capture moments you may have otherwise missed due to reaction delay.

I walk through how to set up and enable PCS, either via the red shooting menu (page 6) or the customizable Quick Control menu. One key limitation is that PCS only works in continuous drive modes and requires the electronic shutter. While the feature makes adjustments seamless, it lacks any real-time on-screen indication that it’s active—an unfortunate design oversight. I also cover how frame rate settings affect the PCS buffer and why it remains fixed at 15 frames regardless of format or resolution.

PCS does come with trade-offs. It prevents changing exposure settings during buffering, increases power consumption by 40–90%, and may reduce post-capture buffer capacity depending on shooting conditions and memory card speed. These factors make it unsuitable for constant use, but when timed right, it can significantly improve your keeper rate in high-speed shooting environments.

The most powerful use of PCS is in shifting from a proactive to a reactive shooting mindset—waiting for peak action before pressing the shutter instead of anticipating it. I share real-world examples, like capturing a Green Heron’s strike without filling my memory card with throwaway frames. PCS has the potential to dramatically reduce culling time and make shooting high-FPS bursts more efficient. It's a game-changer—once you retrain your instincts.
