First stop on our itinerary is Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai.

Meenakshi Amman Temple Complex (also known as Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple), said to date as far back as the 4th century CE, was built in its present form in the 16th–17th centuries. According to Hindu legend, the temple is dedicated to the union of god Shiva (in the form of Sundareswarar) and Meenakshi (a manifestation of Goddess Parvati), the daughter of the then Pandya ruler.

The soaring, elaborately decorated 14 gopuras, or gateway towers, built in between the high walls of the temple complex are majestic, with the tallest of them being more than 170 feet (52 m). Once inside, you will find colonnades, columned mandapas (one of them being the famous Aiyaram Kal Mandapa - Thousand-Pillar Hall), a sacred tank (Pottamarai Kulam - Golden Lotus Pond), and at the centre, the two main shrines to Sundareswarar and Meenakshi.

The next halt is at Rameshwaram, which is famous for the legendary Ramanathaswamy Temple built in the marvelous Dravidian architectural style and the ghost town of Dhanushkodi. Located in the Ramanathapuram district, the town of Rameshwaram is on the Pamban Island which is at the very tip of the Indian peninsula, and is connected with the Indian mainland by Pamban Bridge on Pamban Channel in Gulf of Mannar.

Known as Varanasi of South, Rameshwaram is one of the four most important religious places (Char Dham) in Hinduism. It is believed to be the place from where, according to Ramayana, Shri Ram started his journey with the help of 'Vaanar-Sena' led by Hanuman, to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana. The Rameshwaram Temple, built in 12th century is believed to have the Shiva Lingam which Shri Ram and Devi Sita had built to worship Lord Shiva as a part of penance for Brahmahatya - killing of a Brahman, as Ravana, a Brahman himself, was a devout follower of Lord Shiva.

Next up is the once prosperous town of Dhanushkodi at the south eastern tip of Pamban Island, which has now been reduced to a ghost town since the disastrous cyclone hit in 1964. It is the land border between Sri Lanka and India. Once a town filled with life, it is now just a sandy shoreline with the Bay of Bengal on one side and Indian Ocean on the other.
