Greetings from Setombe and her great wilderness! 🌿🐘 ☀️
We wanted to share a little update of Setombe with you to let you know that she is doing well, happy and healthy following the blood transfusion she was part of to help save snare victim orphan, Fenya.
The blood transfusion certainly helped Fenya live another day but ultimately it was too late and her body was too emaciated and dehydrated from the effects of the snare to survive.
We are so grateful for the blessing of Setombe being close and able to donate blood to try to save another elephant’s life and our team and experts ensured her own well-being throughout the procedure and over the following days.
Setombe was chosen for the transfusion as she isn’t at the beck and call of other younger elephants in the herd, now that her daughter is older and more independent, meaning that she had more time and opportunity to offer a hand (or ear and foot) while not alarming the other elephants.
On the herd’s recent day out in the wild that we shared in three parts, you will have seen Setombe digging in the muddy wallows with Sebakwe, her closest friend in the herd and rolling about on the mound with her daughter Klaserie and the youngsters close by!
Here she takes a moment to herself, calmly grazing and cleaning her feet on a piece of wood. From time to time pieces of the bush can creep into the crevices in the tread of the elephants’ feet and a good scratch against a log helps to dislodge it easily.
