Rampaging Silverado Wildfire Stomps Around Irvine, CA
Critical injuries were sustained by two OCFA ground crew firefighters on Monday while battling the manic Silverado wildfire in Orange County. Both men, ages 26 and 31, are hospitalized with second and third-degree burns.
Although "extremely critical fire weather conditions" had been forecast prior to the eventual fire, Irvine residents simply could not have imagined the sometimes hurricane-force wind dynamics that blew in off the Pacific Coast, driving the ensuing inferno up and down and over and across 7,200+ acres and jumping across Hwy 241, like Mother Nature on LSD. 20-30 miles per hour winds are gusting at 60-70 mph, eluding best efforts to beat the flames into submission.
As the fire continues to spread without containment at this hour, a new Blue Ridge Fire extension east of Anaheim increased evacuation numbers to 80,000 residents. Shelter areas at six community centers face the additional burden of juggling Covid-19 distancing precautions with already stretched available refuge space. The Green Fire subsequently broke out between Yorba and Corona.
More than 60,000 residents in this normally quiet Southern California city faced initial evacuation from the Silverado Canyon area. Residents not threatened by actual fire were nevertheless forced to contend with dangerous levels of heavy pervasive smoke that wrought havoc with respiratory health challenges. Southern California Edison (SCE) power officials also warned of anticipated power outages affecting perhaps as many as one million customers. The California Utilities Commission received a report indicating that a suspected cause of the Silverado Fire may have involved an SCE power line.
Fire conditions listed as "extreme level 3 of 3" now extend across the mountains near Los Angeles. Twenty California wildfires currently involve more than 5,000 firefighters battling for containment. Amidst the dry hot conditions continuing throughout California's current fire season, a sobering similarity also persists across much of the southwest United States, endangering lives, livelihoods, agricultural and natural resources, and water supplies alike.
