Why do edibles get you SO much higher than smoking the same amount of weed? The answer is liver metabolism.
THE SCIENCE:
When you eat cannabis, your liver converts Delta-9-THC into 11-hydroxy-THC—a metabolite that's 5x more potent and crosses the blood-brain barrier faster.
SMOKING vs EDIBLES:
SMOKING:
• 800°C heat
• Lungs → blood → brain (direct)
• Onset: 5-10 minutes
• Duration: 2-3 hours
• Only Δ9-THC active
EDIBLES:
• 150°C heat (less carcinogens)
• Digestive system → liver → blood → brain
• Onset: 1-2 hours (delayed)
• Duration: 4-8 hours (longer)
• Δ9-THC + 11-OH-THC active (more potent)
WHY EDIBLES HIT HARDER:
Your liver creates a second, stronger form of THC (11-OH-THC). Same dose = 2 types of THC in your system = way more high.
THE PROBLEM:
• Takes 1-2 hours to feel effects
• People eat more, thinking, "it's not working."
• End up way too high for 8 hours
• Hard to control dosage ("titrate")
THE BENEFIT:
• No lung damage
• No carcinogens
• No smoke inhalation
• Healthier delivery method
