OI LIVE is back for another meeting and this time we are talking about traveling. Officials Institute Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, led the group discussion on August 21, 2025. The topic of traveling can cover a lot of situations so we started with the step through move and finished by watching plays where players are on the ground, falling or getting up.
OI LIVE meetings are conducted the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm with the intent to provide instruction for basketball officials, and assist in helping everyone get better. Watching and discussing videos in a group brings better awareness in how to apply the rules of basketball in real game situations and provides a fun and supportive environment for officials to ask questions and share philosophies by fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
The video of this online meeting includes 12 various video clips and, as always, a bonus clip.
0:00 - Intro
0:15 - Meeting Schedule
1:13 - 1st example of a step through move. Knowing the pivot foot is important when determining a travel play
2:52 - 2nd example of a step thru down the lane around a defender.
4:56 - Last example of the step through
7:32 - Loose ball play. Did the player attempt to get up? This is the questions
12:19 - Another loose ball play that turns in to a messy play. Lots to see on this one.
18:16 - Falling down play on rebound
24:41 - Player dives for a ball and rolls over. Is this momentum or a travel?
26:16 - Another diving play and this one is in the corner with a possible out of bound but ends in a timeout being called
33:08 - Player falls and passes at the same time. Legal or no?
33:54 - Rebound on a free throw turns into a flip over travel call
39:00 - Traveling called by the Center who reaches into the Leads PCA
51:51 - Dunking play but was it a travel? Should we call this or let it go?
53:46 - BONUS PLAY
1:02:55 - Meeting Schedule
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
