The Battle of Midway (June 4–7, 1942) marked more than the loss of Japanese aircraft carriers it destroyed the core of Japan’s elite naval aviators, men who could not be replaced.
Japanese admirals soon realized that while Japan was losing irreplaceable veterans, the United States was doing the opposite. Beginning in 1943, U.S. pilot training programs expanded massively, producing waves of increasingly skilled carrier pilots. By 1944, American aviators dominated the skies, overwhelming Japanese air defenses through superior numbers, training, and coordination.
