Most thermal models are missing one critical variable.
When we talk about thermal performance, the conversation usually stops at:
• U-value
• SHGC
• Glass makeup
• Frame configuration
• Interface details
All important - but they only exist on paper.
In the real world, heating and cooling loads are heavily influenced by air tightness.
Excessive infiltration in winter means heat loss.
Excessive exfiltration in summer means your conditioned air is literally leaking away.
And unlike the model, this comes down to how well the assembly is built and maintained - especially around operable windows.
If compression seals aren’t set correctly (or adjusted over time), performance will drop no matter what the spec sheet says.
Bottom line - the numbers in the model don’t matter if the building envelope isn’t air tight.
