Ring in the New Year with one of the most dramatic weather transitions you'll ever experience on a single hike! Joined by Winn Martin and Dave "Crazy Dave" Holle, we tackled this incredible journey starting from the windswept, ice-covered ridgeline near New Found Gap, taking us through two completely different worlds in one unforgettable day.


THE EXPERIENCE

This hike begins in the high country on the Tennessee side where winter shows its full force—freezing temperatures, howling winds, and light snow creating an ethereal frozen wonderland that feels like stepping into Narnia. But nature had other plans for this adventure. As we descended into North Carolina, the landscape transformed before our eyes into a completely different season: beautiful weather, cascading waterfalls, and peaceful creek crossings that reminded us why we love these mountains.

THE ROUTE

Trailhead: New Found Gap area
Route: Appalachian Trail → Sweat Heifer trailhead → Kephart Shelter → Kephart Trail Parking area

This scenic route showcases the dramatic elevation changes and diverse microclimates that make the Smoky Mountains so special. From exposed ridgeline hiking to sheltered valley trails, this loop offers everything you could want in a mountain adventure.

THE PERFECT NEW YEAR'S HIKE

There's something magical about starting the year in the mountains, and this hike delivered in every way possible. The contrast between the harsh winter conditions at elevation and the gentle beauty of the lower trails made for an incredible journey that reminded us why we're passionate about exploring these trails.
