Forests Grow in Iceland

If you plant a tree, you get a tree. If you get a thousand people to plant trees, you get a forest.
Iceland is making fantastic progress in afforestation. It's a joy to watch and participate in.
We are growing new forests on deforested and terribly degraded lands. Trees are good ad sequestering carbon, making soil and creating ecosystems.
Cooperation is absolutely essential. Without the participation of farmers, other land owners and organisations, developing a productive forest resource, reclaiming eroded land and growing forests for outdoor recreation could not be possible.
Only seventy years ago, Iceland had practically no forests. Knowledge gained through international cooperation was adapted through our own research and development. In the absence of culture and tradition, science became the basis for forestry. Without that, Iceland would still be treeless.
Businesses, organisations and individuals are now supporting Icelandic forestry to combat climate change. And more are joining all the time.
We at the Icelandic Forest Service are proud of our efforts.

Ef þú gróðursetur tré, færðu tré. Ef þú færð þúsund manns til að gróðursetja tré, færðu skóg.
Stórir hlutir eru að gerast í nýskógrækt á Íslandi. Það er unun á að horfa og taka þátt í.
Við ræktum nýja skóga á mjög illa förnu landi þar sem skógum hefur verið eytt. Tré eru góð í að binda kolefni, búa til jarðveg og skapa vistkerfi.
Samvinna er algjörlega nauðsynleg. Án þátttöku bænda, annarra landeigenda og samtaka væri ekki hægt að byggja upp nytsamlega skógarauðlind, endurheimta rofið land og rækta skóga til útivistar.
Fyrir aðeins 70 árum voru nánast engir skógar á Íslandi. Þekking sem aflað var með alþjóðlegu samstarfi var aðlöguð með innlendum rannsóknum og þróun. Þar sem menninguna og hefðina skorti urðu vísindin undirstaða skógræktar. Án alls þessa væri Ísland enn skóglaust.
Fyrirtæki, samtök og einstaklingar styðja nú við skógrækt á Íslandi í baráttunni við loftslagsbreytingar. Og sífellt bætast fleiri við.
