As game designers, it’s tempting to lean into current popular trends in the board game market as we make decisions about which direction to take our designs. It seems like an efficient approach in guaranteeing that our game can find a market and some degree of success. But it can also mean that our game is put into competition with too many other games and presented into a market that is saturated beyond the point of viability.
In this video I discuss why designing to current trends is not an optimal approach to game design and how it’s better to think outside the box and be creative. It’s better to try and start a new trend than to attach your game design to a current trend, considering the amount of time it will take for your game to be produced, and the limited likelihood that this target trend will still be relevant when it hits the shelves.
