There are a lot of different masking tapes out there for polishing. Here are three styles I use regularly:
1. ScotchBlue Masking Tape — The standard blue masking tape you think of when you think "masking tape". Good adhesion, best for things like pebble texture plastic trim.
2. Scotch Delicate Surface Painter's Tape — Good for sensitive areas that can be damaged by tacky tapes. If you don't have tape like this on hand, you can try something I call "burning" tape. To "burn" your tape, just stick it to a cotton surface like a t-shirt. The lint it pulls off will reduce tackiness significantly.
3. FrogTape Delicate Surface Tape — FrogTape also makes a delicate surface tape with similar performance to the 3M Scotch brand. Another solid option.
These tapes are all about 1" in size. Now, if you run into a situation where you need a thinner tape to get into an intricate area, you can always cut your tape to size.
