You WON'T Believe What Etihad Airways Just Did With Airbus A380 NOW!
Once a proud symbol of the skies, during the pandemic, the Airbus A3 80 was dismissed as a burden and abandoned in deserts. At the same time, the era of smaller, more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft began, leading many to agree that the age of giant four-engine airplanes had come to an end. And yet, history took a dramatic turn. By 20 25, the A3 80 began an unexpected revival, as if this were, at last, truly its moment. Riding this moment, Etihad Airways has also brought its super jumbos back into service, promising an onboard experience even more impressive than before Covid-19.
But why is the airline bringing the A3 80 back now? Where can the airline’s passengers fly on this aircraft? Let's find out.
Etihad’s Reborn A380

After more than half a decade in long-term storage, an Airbus A3 80 has returned to Etihad Airways’ home base in Abu Dhabi—an aircraft many had quietly written off. On 14 January 20 26, the superjumbo departed Tarbes at 07:16 UTC and touched down in Abu Dhabi at 15:00 UTC, marking a symbolic homecoming for one of the airline’s most iconic jets.
The aircraft, registered A6 APC, was first delivered to Etihad in May 20 15. Yet in the 11.1 years since then, it has spent barely five years in active service—a striking statistic that captures the brutal impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on global airline fleets. Like many A3 Eighties worldwide, this aircraft was grounded on 24 March 20 20 as demand collapsed almost overnight. It was initially stored in Abu Dhabi before being ferried to Tarbes, France, on 16 December 20 20 for long-term preservation.

For more than five years, the aircraft remained parked in France, effectively frozen in time. Its return now, nearly six years after it was grounded, underscores just how dramatically the market has shifted again.
During the pandemic, airlines moved swiftly to cut capacity, and ultra-large aircraft were among the first to go. With demand evaporating, many superjumbos were either permanently retired or sent into storage with little expectation of a revival. Yet Etihad’s decision to reactivate this aircraft highlights a broader reality: the King of the Skies is coming back!
