The 80s had some great duets… from the #1 smash Endless Love by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie to Say Say Say by Sir Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson to underrated gems like Ann Wilson and Robin Zander's Surrender to Me. but likely the most devastating heart-wrenching duet came from the 1985 film White Nights and was penned by Yacht Rock singer-songwriter Steven Bishop who killed it in the 70s with these classics...

He wrote this 1985 #1 hit sung by Phil Collins and up-and-comer Marilyn Martin… Separate Lives. the #1 smash from late 1985. This was right up Phil’s alley since he’d just hit #1 with his hit Against All Odds. Many people think Phil Collins wrote it… and from his phenomenal heart-wrenching performance who could blame those who did. But Stephen Bishop wrote it for the movie White Nights…and it is quite personal.

Stephen Bishop has gotten the reputation of writing very witty, humorous songs but they all had a touch of real melancholy running through them. He’s a brilliant writer with a very memorable and distinct tenor voice. He sang the theme to the blockbuster comedy Animal House and was even in the movie in a hilarious scene with John Belushi. On this film, he met rising actress Karen Allen and the two became lovers.

Several years later Stephen Bishop would be picked to sing the Dave Grusin and Alan and Marilyn Bergman 80s standard it might be you from the movie Tootsie. It would hit #1 on the AC charts and become his biggest solo hit counting all-time streaming and radio play numbers…On and One is barely behind hit. Anyway, It was up for an Oscar then a few years later he had his first #1 hit .He wrote Separate Lives for the Taylor Hackford film White Nights starring Michail Barishnikov and Gregory Hines.
