Ankle Sprain Treatment (Physiotherapy Guide)
Treatment for an ankle sprain depends on the severity of the injury. The primary goals are to reduce pain/swelling, restore range of motion, strengthen the ankle, and prevent re-injury.
🔹 1. Immediate Care (First 48–72 Hours) – R.I.C.E. Protocol
Rest: Avoid weight-bearing activities. Use crutches if needed.
Ice: Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours to reduce swelling.
Compression: Use an elastic bandage or ankle brace to support and compress.
Elevation: Raise the ankle above heart level to reduce swelling.
🔹 2. Pain Management
Medications: NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) if advised by a doctor.
Modalities:
Ultrasound therapy
TENS for pain relief
Cryotherapy
🔹 3. Taping/Bracing
Use during sports or high-risk activities for added support.
🔹 When to Refer
Severe swelling or deformity
No improvement after 1–2 weeks
Suspected fracture or high ankle
