Four seasons in, LSU is staring at another year without an NCAA Tournament appearance, and even LSU AD Verge Ausberry has said everything will be evaluated if the Tigers miss the postseason. On the surface, the record suggests a change might be necessary.

But firing McMahon isn’t nearly as simple as fans want it to be.

Buying out McMahon and his staff would cost around $10 million, and that’s before paying a new coach, a new staff, and rebuilding an entire roster. All of this comes at a time when LSU has already made historic financial commitments — including a $54 million buyout of Brian Kelly, a $91 million deal for Lane Kiffin, increased budgets for staff, travel, and recruiting, and funding what could be the most expensive college football roster in the country at more than $40 million for 2026.

So the real question becomes: is there donor appetite left for another massive buyout?
