Hi I’m Erin and welcome to the Bad Denim Review where we order and try on jeans for you. As I was having a scroll around looking for another pair of jeans I came across this bad boy, the Le One Skinny Jean by Frame in the Keller wash. Somehow, shockingly they have done away with the multitude of specific sizes and created only 2 sizes - the 1 which fits 23-28 and the 2 for 29-34. That’s 6 sizes in one jeans. I knew the only way to achieve this would be through some incredibly stretchy fabric which is usually not something I seek out but I had to get this jean and try it.
Let’s talk about elasticity and growth. So elasticity is how far you can pull the fabric out. And growth measures how much it returns to its previous shape. These are terms we use when looking at fabrics, a sort of scorecard for how well the stretch denim will perform. When designing denim we look at the fabric’s technical sheet, all of these tests will have been done in a controlled testing environment in a lab but you can do a simplified version of these tests at home too.
So start with an unworn pair and measure any point in the leg. Not the hem because the thread can stop the stretch. Pull it out as far as it will go and note the new elongated measure. Now let it go and note the new relaxed measure. Do this about 10 more times to really work the fabric, you’re simulating a day of wear. Where is the measure at now? This is your elongation and return and it’s usually expressed as a percentage.
Stretch fabric will always grow but you want to keep it as low as possible, anything under 4% is good. The more premium the fabrics the lower the growth. This is why on some cheaper stretch pairs you can get really baggy knees, that’s where the jean is manipulated the most.
The Le One jean has about 65% elongation, which is very very high and this is why it can fit up to six sizes, and maybe 1-2% growth, which is amazingly low and really good for a stretch jean. It’s what you’re paying £225 for.
Let’s try it on! So it is truly a skinny Jean. It’s tight to the body everywhere. The fabric is really spongy and springy. I feel like if you wanted to, you could go for a run in these. There are no wash effects, it’s an all-over dark indigo jean. This pair of jeans is the backdrop, not the show. If you’re after a skinny, this one is quite unassuming and would go with everything you wear skinnies with.
The zip isn’t showing which is a feat for something this stretchy. They have very visibly moved the button to the left of the zip, nearly 2 cm which is correct for a jean this stretchy and works to keep the top of the zip from peeking out.
It’s a tight hem so it needs a dainty shoe, preferably something that shows a bit of top foot like a glove shoe.
From a brand perspective, this is innovative, it means fewer sizes to cut, lower wastage, lower chance of odd sizes out not selling.
As a consumer this idea should resonate with all women, our sizes - they change. Unfortunately with the majority of my wardrobe and all those lovely non and low stretch jeans, there’s not much negotiation room. I love the idea of having a jean that I can always get in to. Also, the comfort level is high. Guys, really high. This is an easy jean to wear.
So am I going to keep it? I think it’s a really good skinny and I love the concept. If you want to invest in a skinny that will always fit you and won’t bag out this is le One for you.
