A brand new cosmic visitor has arrived! Discovered just yesterday on September 12, 2025, Comet SWAN25B has surprised astronomers by emerging from behind the Sun in a bright outburst. As an unexpected guest in our night sky, it's already visible with binoculars and sports a stunning ion tail.
In this video, we break down everything you need to know about this celestial surprise, including how you can spot it from India!
☄️ About Comet SWAN25B ☄️
Discovery: Spotted on September 12, 2025, in data from SOHO's SWAN instrument by amateur astronomer Vladimir Bezugly.
Current Brightness: Shining at a surprising magnitude of 7.4–7.5, making it bright enough for binoculars or a small telescope from a dark location.
Striking Features: It has developed a beautiful ion tail stretching 2-3 degrees across the sky (about 4-6 times the width of the full Moon!).
Current Location: The comet is currently in the constellation Virgo, appearing near the planet Mars and the bright star Spica.
The Future: It has already passed its closest point to the Sun (perihelion). While there's a risk it could disintegrate, it's on a path that might bring it as close as 0.25 AU (37 million km) to Earth in October 2025, potentially making it much brighter!
🔭 How to Spot Comet SWAN25B From India 🔭
September 2025: Viewing is tricky. Look low on the western horizon just after sunset (around 6:30–7:00 PM IST). You'll need a very clear, unobstructed view. Observers in Southern India will have a slight advantage as it will be a bit higher in their sky.
October 2025: This is our best hope! If the comet survives and makes its close approach, it could become much brighter and appear higher in the sky, making it a potential target for stargazers across the entire country.
