Do you know how your country is doing on the Sustainable Development Goals? Are you looking for a dashboard that you can track progress against goals and targets and identify any gaps?

The National SDG tracker is an innovative tool developed by UN ESCAP to track progress towards the SDGs, based on your own country’s data. It is powerful, yet simple to use. In Just a few clicks, you can visualize your country’s SDG progress and create your own dashboards.

Let me show you how it works.

As you know, the SDGs have 17 goals, 169 targets, and 231 indicators with data provided by countries to custodian agencies.

Your country, however, may have a national set of indicators and additional data that can be used to track progress. And you may have specific target values that are realistic to your country’s scenario.

The national SDG tracker accommodates this!

As you first log in to the tool, the workspace shows the three progress assessment charts based on global data and regional targets. You are given the option to publish the same charts, or edit underlying indicators, data, and targets to produce your customized results.

First, let’s see how to edit data and indicators. Start by clicking on the “Edit indicators and data” tab on the top.

Since many SDG indicators have sub-indicators that may cover different aspects, or use different units, the tool allows for multiple series under each indicator.

You need to review the list of series and take one or several of the following actions:

1- revise parameters of an existing series
2- revise data or add more data points to an existing series
3- add a disaggregation to an existing series
4- disable existing series or disaggregation that you would like to leave out for national assessment and finally
5- add new series or disaggregation and their corresponding data points that you wish to use in addition to SDG indicators, these are called proxy indicators.

You can set parameters for each series, which will be explained in a moment.

Alternatively, you can download a template and then import your full data set into the system from the template.

The changes you make will be reflected in the graphs once you click on the top bar to update the results. The calculations may take up to a minute to complete.

Now let's discuss parameters.

To be included in the assessment, six parameters have to be defined for each series or disaggregation. For existing series and disaggregation, you can change them according to your country’s realities. Also, you are required to specify these parameters for each new series or disaggregation.

Parameters are easy to set. Click on the series that you want to edit, and go to “edit series”.

First Specify the unit of measure Then Set the numeric target value to be achieved by 2030 Next set the minimum and maximum values possible, for keeping predictions within a realistic range

Then choose the prediction method used in calculations.

Finally, choose the trend direction - increase, decrease or parity.

And that’s all there is to it!

Your results can be downloaded or published online as dynamic charts. This means you are able to embed the charts into your own website or reports. By following these simple steps you can now monitor your country’s progress towards the 2030 goals for everyone, no matter who they are or where they live.

Access the tool at data.unescap.org and start tracking the SDGs now. And For more information on the progress methodology, watch the video “UN ESCAP SDG progress assessment methodology”.
