Cycling Through Ghost Village at Karakoram Highway | Chilas to Pattan | RIVER INDUS BICYCLE TOUR

Описание: This is a video of my ride from Chilas to Pattan which was more than a long day on the Karakoram Highway, it was a slow unspooling of history, loss, and the quiet resilience of people who live where mountains meet the Indus.

I began in Chilas, where the heat and the river form a strange welcome. The road climbs and bends, clouds brush the peaks, and the Karakoram stands like a guardian. Along the way I met shepherds, the silent keepers of the valley and stumbled on work-sites where huge machines are reshaping the future: dam construction, road cuts through granite, and the slow engineering that will change lives and landscapes.

One of the most haunting parts of the journey were the ghost villages, settlements once full of life, now emptied and shuttered after dam projects forced relocation. Walking among their silent lanes felt like reading a book where the last page had been ripped out.

Doors closed, lamps gone cold, and walls that still remember the echo of children’s footsteps. I paused at several of these villages, drank tea with a few locals, and listened to small stories about how life used to be.

The Indus River kept company throughout, sometimes roaring, sometimes whispering swallowing the hues of every stream that joined it. Each tributary brought its own color and memory, and together they made the river feel like a living archive.

I also stopped at Samar Nala, a simple, beautiful place where drivers rest and travelers breathe. Samar Nala is modest but perfect: shade, running water, and the comfort that comes after a long climb. I sat there, watching the light fall as the valley cooled, and then pushed on toward Pattan as evening folded into night.

This is a video about motion and memory: the dangerous curves and the generous kindness of strangers; the heavy machines of development and the fragile remains of village life; the roar of water and the hush of abandoned streets.
