Work crews have completely raised the sunken Sewol ferry from the ocean floor, where it spent nearly three years. Ballast water and oil are being removed from the ferry before the next steps in the investigation can take place.

The Sewol ferry was completely raised from the water on Saturday evening. The ship has been damaged in multiple places while being submerged in water for three years. The stern and the left side of the ship have sustained more severe damage than the bow and the right side. The rescuers are currently removing ballast water and oil from the ferry. Water from the passenger cabins has been almost completely removed through windows and doors. Only water in the lower part of the ferry including the engine room is left. The government plans to remove the water through windows and exits as much as possible to minimize the concerns of the bereaved families. But removing water from sealed spaces inside the ferry can be a problem. The government says that rescue workers will inevitably have to drill small holes in certain parts, such as the cargo compartments.
[Soundbite] Chang Ki-wook(Member of Sewol Ferry Salvage Team) : "Water will mostly exit the ship through slits and openings. But we may have to drill holes if deemed necessary."
The rescue workers have installed oil spill prevention devices to remove oil from the ferry. Removing ballast water and oil from the ferry is essential to reduce its weight and ensure safe transportation. The government expects this process to take at least two days.
