About the Film
A haunting meditation on art-under-annihilation evolves through the musicians who endured the orchestras of Auschwitz, where performance became both refuge and a twisted tool of cruelty. Inside the camp, prisoners were forced to play as laborers marched to their deaths and Nazi captors sought refined entertainment amid mass murder. Within this grotesque collision of high culture and atrocity, music became a means of coercion, deception, perseverance, and resistance. At the center stands Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, now 100, the last surviving member of the women’s orchestra, whose cello spared her from imminent death. Survivor testimony, rediscovered compositions, and present-day concerts filmed at the camps sound forth melody as a vessel for remembrance, dignity, and the indomitable human spirit.
