An organization’s culture is not defined by only those within the organization. It is an “open
system” informed by people, social norms, and outside technology in ways that force the
evolution of expectations of its constituents. Changing generational leadership, national
demographics, and perspectives of tolerance or intolerance may affect the volunteer base and
the influence volunteers have over a nonprofit’s culture. Nonprofit organizations highly
dependent on volunteer support for their program delivery and financial support should have a
higher sensitivity to the evolution of social attitudes to remain relevant and sustain operations.
In this talk, we’ll touch on how misalignment between an organization’s mission and the
changing attitudes in society affect economic and volunteer support, how a lack of diversity
within an organization affects its ability to respond to external factors, and how an
organization’s culture from changing generational leadership. Finally, we’ll learn a few ways in
which nonprofit leadership might navigate these challenges to increase relevancy, social
impact, and sustainability.
