Today we’re learning 9 essential colors in Russian – and how to use them correctly in real sentences.

жёлтый – yellow
зелёный – green
синий – blue
фиолетовый – purple
оранжевый – orange
коричневый – brown
серый – gray
белый – white
чёрный – black

But here’s the important part:
In Russian, colors are adjectives – and that means they must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they describe.

For example:

жёлтый стул – a yellow chair (masculine)
жёлтая лампа – a yellow lamp (feminine)
жёлтое платье – a yellow dress (neuter)
жёлтые ботинки – yellow shoes (plural)

Quick Tip:
The word синий (blue) is special – its forms are a bit irregular compared to other colors. For example:
синяя, синее, синие (instead of синная, синное, etc.)

Just like verbs, adjectives change their endings to match the noun – so learning colors is a great way to practice adjective agreement!
