In this veterinary CPD webinar, Dr Kit Sturgess RCVS discusses the burning question “when to wait and when to worry” when triaging a patient that is unwell and how in-house diagnostics can support clinical decisions quickly and efficiently.

The answer is not always straightforward, requiring a balance of case management, prognosis, and budget.

Kit presents how the innovative use of adjunctive tests can support rapid clinical decision-making.  For example, measurement of acute phase proteins such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA) can be invaluable in providing early guidance in case management, including assessment of whether current signs are likely associated with acute or chronic inflammatory diseases, the most appropriate use of medication and when further investigation is required to determine cause of illness.

During the webinar, Dr Sturgess also shares a range of cases, including a 10-year-old German shorthaired pointer presenting as vaguely unwell with reduced appetite and discusses whether this is this just a flare-up of his chronic osteoarthritis and likely to respond to pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatment, or something else.
