STORYLINE:
French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde arrived at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington on Wednesday, seeking to succeed former Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
Strauss-Kahn resigned last month after he being charged with sexually assaulting a New York hotel housekeeper, an allegation he denies.
Also contending is the head of Mexico's central bank, Agustin Carstens, who told the IMF's 24-member executive board on Tuesday that the world's emerging economies needed a bigger voice in IMF decisions.
Lagarde is considered the front-runner because she has solid backing from European nations.
After hearing presentations from both Carstens and Lagarde and interviewing them, the IMF's executive board said it planned to meet on June 28 to make their decision and to complete that process by June 30.
The United States, the largest shareholder in the IMF, has yet to announce whether it will back Lagarde or Carstens.
