The Universal cuff is an activities of daily living (ADL) assistive device designed to assist individuals with limited hand function in gripping and grasping objects. It typically consists of a padded cuff that wraps around the user's hand just proxinal to the MCPJ and secures with straps, elastic or Velcro. The cuff has an opening where the user's hand can be inserted. Here's a detailed description of its components and how it works:
Cuff: The cuff portion of the device is usually made of a soft, comfortable material like foam or fabric.

Straps or Velcro: The cuff is secured onto the user's hand using adjustable straps or Velcro closures. This allows for a customized fit based on the individual's hand size and comfort level. Sometimes elastic is also used. This may be beneficial for those with bilateral impairments.

Interior Grip Surface: Inside the cuff, there may be a textured or grippy surface to enhance the user's ability to hold objects securely. This helps prevent slipping and provides stability when grasping items. On the cuff shown in the video there is a cushion padding at the volar surface which provides more comfort to the user.

Adjustability: Many Universal cuffs offer adjustable features such as buckles to accommodate different hand sizes and shapes. This adaptability ensures a snug and comfortable fit for the user.

Compatibility: Universal cuffs are designed to be compatible with a wide range of objects, from utensils and writing tools to grooming aids and household items. This versatility allows users to perform various tasks independently. For example, in culturally sensitive eating styles this may be considered as a solution for right-handed eating.

Usage: To use the Universal cuff, the user simply inserts their fingers or hand through the opening and secures the cuff around the dorsum of hand just proximal to the MCPJ. The utensils can be inserted and attached securely inside the opening provided in the cuff. The cuff provides stability and support, enabling individuals with limited hand function to perform everyday tasks more easily and independently. This cuff can be used in cases of finger amputations fitted with or without cosmetic prostheses, Spinal cord injury with weak hand functions as in Quadriparesis, Stroke, neuromuscular disorders where there are impaired hand functions, etc.

Overall, the Universal cuff is a practical and versatile tool that enhances grasp function for individuals with disabilities or hand impairments, promoting independence and improving quality of life.
