FABRIC BURN TEST!!
MATERIALS
Aluminum candle
Match or lighter
2 Aluminum trays or glass plates
Tweezers or forceps
Scissors
Fabrics - silk, wool, cotton, acrylic, linen, jute, polyester, nylon, rayon, coir
PROCEDURE
Cut each fabric into 2-inch squares. Set aside.
On a table, place the two aluminum trays or glass plates beside each other.
Put the aluminum candle on one plate or tray. Light the candle.
Pick up the fabric with forceps or tweezers and pass the silk fabric horizontally across the candle flame. Watch the fiber both as it approaches the heat and as it ignites. Remove it from the flame before it is consumed, drop it on the other tray or plate, and note how it reacts. When it stops flaming, pay attention to the odor of the smoke. Finally, examine the ash when it has cooled with the tweezers or crumble the ashes between your thumb and index finger to test the residue texture.
Repeat #4 to all the other fabrics, one by one.
