Описание: In the 1700s, workers of the Dutch East India Company were digging near Nagapattinam when they discovered something extraordinary — 21 massive copper plates weighing nearly 30 kilograms.

These were not ordinary inscriptions.
They were 1000-year-old diplomatic records from the Chola Empire period, now famously known as the Leiden Plates.

The plates record an agreement between:

Rajaraja Chola I
Rajendra Chola I
and the Srivijaya kingdom of present-day Indonesia.

A Srivijaya king requested permission to build a Buddhist monastery in India. Rajaraja Chola not only approved it, but also donated the revenue of an entire village to support the monastery.

To preserve this royal promise permanently, Rajendra Chola engraved it onto copper plates sealed with the Chola tiger emblem.

After being discovered by the Dutch, the plates eventually reached Leiden University in the Netherlands, where they remained for nearly 200 years.

In May 2026, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten officially returned the plates to India.

This story proves that Tamil kingdoms were not just regional powers — they were active participants in global trade, diplomacy and geopolitics over a thousand years ago.
