Neural Tube defect means defect in the vertebrae or failure of closure of Neural tube...it is not a chromosomal abnormality..The most common site of neural tube defect is Lumbosacral region.
CAUSES OF NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS:
Folate deficiency
Chromosomal abnomalities
Maternal Torch infections.
Teratogenic Drugs..
Neural Tube consist of 2 parts :
Anterior part
Posterior part
If defect occur in anterior part then it is called as anencephaly but if defect occur in posterior part then it is termed as Spina Bifida.
Spina bifida means spine defext and the most common site of spina bifida is lumbosacral region..
Spina bifida consist of :
Spina bifida occulta
Spina bifida cystica.
DIAGNOSIS OF SPINA BIFIDA :
Pre natal diagnosis is confirmed by increase level of alpha fetoproteins in maternal serum .
Post natal diagnosis neen clinical assessment and spinal radiography..
TREATMENT :
Folic acid 400 microgram/day
