Today is the 29th of April. On this day in 1991, catastrophic cyclones and tidal surges killed about 138,000 people in the south-east coast of Bangladesh and 10 million people lost everything. Cyclone 91 is one of the deadliest cyclones in history. This horrific incident of '91 still haunts the coastal people like a nightmare. Even after so many years of the incident, you cannot erase that sad day from your memory. I wake up in the middle of the night when I think of tidal waves and cyclones. The corpses of the dead, the cries and lamentations of the bereaved come back again and again in their lives. On this day in 1991, the coastal region of Sandwip in North Chittagong was also devastated by a catastrophic cyclone. Convener of the joint Sandwip rights movement. Hasanuzzaman Sandwipi told Jago News that thousands of people died in Sandwip in 1991. We are still carrying that sad memory. There are not enough cyclone shelters in Sandwip. Many places still do not have embankments. Again, the height of any embankment is not more than four feet. To protect Sandwip from cyclones and tidal surges, it is important to build embankments at least 10 feet high around the island. The block embankment in South Sandwip is also not satisfactory.
