THE ANNIVERSARY PAVILION – DOWNSEND SCHOOL
This video showcases the new pavilion designed and constructed by Sports Clubhouses for Downsend School in Ashtead, Surrey. Sports Clubhouses took the project through from initial concept design to full construction on site. The new pavilion opened in the late spring 2016!
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The school are developing every aspect of their sporting delivery both for the pupils and those other community groups and clubs who use the site. The school currently has a sports hall and swimming pool that is used by the public out of school hours and this is adequately served by changing facilities however, the astroturf pitch, the brand new cricket nets (developed with funding assistance from Surrey County Cricket Club and the ECB) and the main sports fields have no adequate locally sited changing facilities. This is barely manageable for the school usage and is extremely awkward for visiting teams. It is completely impractical for the external users to be allowed access to the changing rooms and toilet facilities in the main body of the school without incurring security and health and safety issues.
This pavilion provides a solution to this dilemma by providing a building that primarily houses two changing rooms and toilet facilities including disabled WC. In addition a small kitchen and some social space will also allow the building to provide refreshments to not only the teams that are taking part in external activity but also parents and external visitors to the School.
A small office provides additional staffing resources for the club which is paerticurlalry useful when the extensive sporting activities are taking place.
DESIGN
The position of the building has been selected because of its central location where it is adjacent to the astroturf pitch and the entry onto the sports fields but, also, because it provides direct access from the car park. This allows straightforward controlled entry to the sports facilities for external users and visiting teams without having to gain access to the main school site.
The building is of a contemporary design with a mixture of acrylic render and larch timber cladding. The timber cladding helps the pavilion merge into the general natural surroundings of the sports field facing aspect. The inclusion of large sections of glazing and sliding doors allows the spectators inside the building to have an excellent panoramic view of the sports facilities. The flat roof will be finished in rubber with fascias and soffits finished in timber and all rainwater will be removed from the roof using stainless steel downpipe features.
