Richmond, California's Unity Park project transformed an eight-block, neglected section of the Richmond Greenway into a beautiful and much-needed green space for neighborhood youth, families, and seniors to exercise, play, and gather as a community. Driven over six years by a coalition of 17 nonprofits called Friends of the Richmond Greenway (FORG), the Unity Park project included an extensive community-led design, planning, and construction process that employed dozens of local residents. As Sherman Dean, Green Team Coordinator for Groundwork Richmond, one of the members of the FORG coalition explains, collaborative, community-led projects like Unity Park are driving healthy transformation in Richmond and providing local residents"… a chance to really be vocal and be heard out here and … control our own story."
